Years 9-12 Music - Music for Theatre - Composition
Students in years 9-12 were working towards a composition assessment task for which they were required to compose a recitative based on a story book or news article. Students were learning skills of composition particular to the recitiative style, including word-setting, secco and accompagnato recitative, and fundamental rules of harmony. Students had to complete a folio that documented their ideas and reflection throughout the process of creating and completing their composition.
The challenge in this practicum was differentiated teaching. Teaching the same topic to four different year levels, each with students of different prior musicianship knowledge presented me with a rewarding challenge. Due to the small class sizes I was able to complete scaffolding examples with the class and then set students to individual tasks. During this time I could then see each student individually to assist them with their individual needs.
